This scarf is made from a woven polyester material that looks and feels just like silk and measures 80" x 24". The whimsical flower motifs across the scarf are inspired by the decorative embroidery on a winged-back chair that once belonged to William Ellery, one of Rhode Island's two signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Now in the collections of the Newport Historical Society, the Chippendale armchair was embroidered by Ellery's wife, Abigail. The chair was later given as a gift to their daughter, Almy upon her wedding to William Stedman, the first US senator elected from Massachusetts.
