Hollywood Comes to Newport

Exhibit Now Open

Colonial Newport was home many highly skilled artisans, and William Claggett was no exception. Considered one of America's earliest and greatest clockmakers, Claggett's majestic pieces of functional art still inspire awe today. In addition to crafting clocks, Claggett was an engraver and printer, and was tapped by the Rhode Island general assembly to design and print state currency in 1738.

Newport Historical Society's exhibit My small Ability” The Life and Work of William Claggett explores the life and artistry of William Claggett, and the eighteenth century Newport that he called home.
